Instructions for Making a Quillow

What is a Quillow?

A quillow is a combination of a quilt and a pillow – it’s a cozy blanket that can be folded into a compact decorative pillow
when not in use. Making a quillow is a fun sewing project that can be personalized to your taste and utilized in various
settings.

Materials

  • Fabric for quilt top – around 2 yards
  • Fabric for quilt bottom – around 2 yards
  • Fabric for the quillow pocket – around 1/2 yard
  • Batting – enough to cover the quilt size
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Iron

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Fabric

Wash and iron all the fabric pieces before starting the project to ensure they won’t shrink or wrinkle after sewing.

Preparing the fabric

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

Cut the quilt top and bottom fabrics to the desired size, making sure they are the same dimensions. Cut the quillow pocket
fabric to around 18 inches by 18 inches.

Step 3: Layer the Quilt

Place the quilt top fabric on a flat surface, then layer the batting on top of it. Finally, carefully place the quilt bottom
fabric on top, ensuring all layers are aligned.

Step 4: Sew the Quilt Layers

With the quilt layers aligned, pin them together to prevent shifting. Starting from one corner, sew around the edges using
a ½ inch seam allowance, leaving a small opening to turn the quilt right side out.

Step 5: Turn and Press

Through the small opening left in the previous step, turn the quilt right side out. Use a chopstick or similar tool to push
the corners out. Press the quilt with an iron to make it crisp and flat.

Step 6: Sew the Pocket

Fold the quillow pocket fabric in half, right sides together, and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening to turn it
right side out.

Step 7: Attach the Pocket

Position the pocket on one end of the quilt’s bottom side, aligning the raw edges. Pin it in place and sew along the sides
and bottom, securely attaching it to the quilt.

Step 8: Fold into a Quillow

To fold your quillow, start by bringing the pocket end up to the center of the quilt. Then, fold the parts without the
pocket over to meet the pocket, creating a tidy pillow.
